There is something incredibly Minnesotan about lacing up a pair of skates and enjoying an afternoon or evening outdoors on the ice. It’s part of our state’s fabric—something that feels as though it originated up north on frozen lakes and weaved its way through the state like a holiday snowstorm.
It’s hard to imagine a Minnesota winter without someone we know hitting the ice for a leisurely skate outside under the stars. It’s a tradition, like Holidazzle, that brings us all together.
So why not combine the two?
This year in Loring Park, the Minneapolis Downtown Council, Minneapolis SafeZone Collaborative and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board have joined together collaboratively to bring an outdoor skating rink to Downtown Minneapolis. The skating rink is currently being constructed in Loring Park and will officially open up on Friday, November 27—the first evening of Holidazzle. The rink will be open during posted hours throughout Holidazzle, and will also run through this winter’s outdoor skating season.
The effort is being supported by VEIT, Kraus-Anderson, the Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council, U.S. Bank, Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District and Love Your Melon.
Bringing outdoor ice to Downtown Minneapolis is something that helps the downtown area in so many ways. First and foremost, it adds another opportunity to add activity and programming in Loring Park—effectively enhancing the downtown experience through a place to skate throughout the winter. We talk all the time in terms of how activities create perceive and real safety in all neighborhoods, and bringing people together to ice skate in the downtown area adds another element of activity and engagement throughout the winter.
It also pairs well with Holidazzle, which has been a staple of the downtown area for two decades.
Holidazzle will be taking place in Loring Park this year beginning the night after Thanksgiving and running Thursdays through Sundays, concluding Sunday December 20. It will be a gathering place for families and friends, colleagues and groups who want to enjoy the holiday season together in one festive location. There will be mingling, ambiance, activities and much more that engages all ages.
When you come down to skate during Holidazzle, you’ll be able to get ready to hit the ice in the Warming House courtesy of CenterPoint Energy. Take your time skating and enjoying the sights of downtown’s largest park lit up for the holiday season. Then when you’re finished, you’ll have a chance to browse great local food, beverage and merchandise vendors, visit Santa Claus on site during the first and last weekends, listen to local musical performances, huddle around a bonfire, watch weekly holiday classics that span generations and much more.
There is something for everyone at this year’s Holidazzle, and it all takes place in one convenient location that is free and open to the public.
If you’re passing through Loring Park between now and Thanksgiving, you’ll likely see work being done in preparation of Holidazzle. Currently this week, there is progress being made on the skating rink that will be ready for use next Friday.
This skating rink is for the downtown area to enjoy throughout the season. Come down and enjoy a special opportunity to take in our downtown on the ice, and if you do so over the next month you’ll be able to mesh two longstanding Minnesota winter traditions into one unique experience.
It’s an Up North feel in the heart of our city.
Stop by and check out all the downtown has to offer, and have fun taking part in our outdoor skating experience during Holidazzle and beyond.
