Minnesota Awesome Puts Our State’s Pride On Our Shirt

Minnesotans love Minnesota. And our love of t-shirts could be considered universal.

So when you put the two together, you’re looking at a recipe for success.

That’s what Minnesota Awesome did when it began selling Minnesota-centric t-shirts back in January. Mike Gordon and his brother, Dan, ran a small t-shirt company back in college and, during their professional careers, began feeling a calling to revisit their shirt-making passion.

“We got the entrepreneurial bug,” Mike said, “and saw a need for a fun and up-beat, locally-based clothing and accessories company that celebrates the love we have for Minnesota, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Minnesota Awesome was born.”

It’s as though the (north) stars aligned for the Gordon brothers, who are certainly providing a product to Minnesotans at a time when state pride seems to be at an all-time high. The two are a small shop—Mike and Dan are the only two full-time workers—but they’re doing something they love and creating shirts Minnesotans adore.

The list of Minnesota-centric apparel is never-ending.

There’s the traditional “Minnesota Nice” design. The Babe the Blue Ox “Hey Babe” shirt. The ode to Kirby Pucket’s Game 6 home run in the 1991 World Series. The alphabet shirt, which highlights the “M” and “N” next to one another in the alphabet soup. And there’s many more—too many to list—that in all seriousness (and with a little light-hearted humor) strike home with true Minnesotans.

They have no background in graphic design, but they taught themselves Adobe Photoshop and used their Minnesotan heritage and sense of humor as their compass. Turns out that’s all they need.

The brothers are from Richfield, so they understand not only state pride but also the Holidazzle tradition. Bringing their company together with Holidazzle only made sense.

“Our designs celebrate Minnesota’s rich culture by portraying its light-hearted and positive manner,” Mike said. “Not only is Holidazzle part of Minnesota’s rich history, but it has become a rite of passage as a celebration of Minnesota culture during the holiday season.”

You can take part in Holidazzle and check out the Minnesota Awesome designs on Thursdays through Sundays from Friday, November 27 through Sunday, December 20. Stop by 5 pm – 9 pm on Thursdays and Fridays or 11 am – 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays to enjoy the festivities.

Mike said the holidays are a time for family and positive emotions. It’s a time to be thankful for the positive things in our lives and a time to spread love to friends, families and neighbors. Being able to bring people together in one place to enjoy the season, the outdoors and the Minnesota winter all in one is a special opportunity in itself.

He said he hopes people will get acquainted with Minnesota Awesome while they’re at Holidazzle and see how well the apparel fits into everyday life here in Minnesota.

“I hope that seeing our product will make people smile, and they will leave feeling happier than when they came,” Mike said. “I hope that after meeting us, people will feel our passion for putting a smile on people’s faces while joining in the celebration of everything Minnesota.

All it takes is a t-shirt and a smile.

“We love it,” Mike said. “With Minnesota’s rich history and culture, designing witty shirt designs based on the state has been a fun experience.”
