Kevin Mathews started as a professional artist in November of 2009. His initial interest for making pottery sparked while in high school and community college, then continued to support him financially while attending Bemidji State University.
Kevin said throughout this time, he found art to be an extremely therapeutic way of coping with a great deal of loss he was unfortunately experiencing. This emotional connection to the craft is what eventually lead him to pursue a career in pottery, and would later graduate with a four year degree in art. That’s the foundation for Kevin Matthews Pottery, LLC.
“The idea for my business has grown from- making art to heal, to making art to heal and live,” Kevin said.
This year during Holidazzle you can find Kevin Matthews Pottery, LLC Nov. 25-27. There will be a variety of functional and decorative pieces to purchase including cups, mugs, vases, yarn bowls, butter dishes, Raku pottery, Horse Hair pottery, earring holders and more.
When Kevin first saw horse hair pottery being done back in 2001, he said he simply fell in love with it.
“Not only the process of laying hair on porcelain to design it but how it looks so unique within five seconds of creating each design,” he said. “I also love that it’s part of my Indian heritage.”
Don’t miss your chance to see if for yourself. Holidazzle’s full calendar run is Thursday through Sundays from Friday, November 25 through Friday, December 23. It is open Thursdays from 5-9 pm, Fridays from 5-10 pm, Saturdays from 11 am-10 pm and Sundays from 11 am-7 pm.
With the holidays being Kevin’s favorite season, he can’t wait to be a part of Holidazzle this year.
“I enjoy the decorations, lights and festivities that accompany the holiday season in Minnesota,” he said. “I have fond memories of family members who embraced this holiday, and shared with others and passed that on to me.”
Kevin loves Minnesota, and to provide a gift that was made in Minnesota for someone who lives in Minnesota gives him great joy.
While at Holidazzle, He hopes people can sense, see and hear his deep passion for this season as well as his art work and how he chooses to share that with others.
He also provides a paint your own pottery business called Glaze 2 Amaze in his studio. Available for anyone looking for a way to celebrate their special event or needs in an artistic way. Whether it’s an activity while on vacation, a private party or a clay date; all are welcome.
